Soc 315 small groups (Nov 19): Children’s Mental Health

What do care coordination and wraparound care have in common? How are they different? Could
they complement each other (that is, be used together)? Provide a clear example to show your
understanding and justify your response.

1. Describe the stages of wraparound care, using a child’s absenteeism as an example of how
wraparound care can help children and families.

2. You’re in a job interview, and a) you’ve been asked to explain the most important findings of
the ACEs study, and b) how the results of the study should inform social work practice. This
could make or break your candidacy, don’t be sloppy.


3. In the Oregon update to the ACEs study, discuss in your group and a) come up with the three
most important findings for the Eastern Oregon Medicaid population (important in the sense
that either they help explain challenges this population faces, or suggest areas ripe for public
health measures). You can use Ctrl F and search in the document on ‘Eastern Oregon’ and it will
give you around 70 hits that you can pretty quickly scroll through. b) What do they suggest for
the state of welfare (and declining budgets, and children)?


4. You’ve just been asked to design a position at the local elementary school: a school-based
mental health counselor. Based on what you’ve learned from the readings, describe what kind
of work (and with whom) the job would entail, who (agencies, professionals) you would likely
be working with, and come up with three measures for determining over time how effective the
position has been at addressing children’s mental health issues at the school.


5. You work as a school counselor, and one of the teachers is boasting about how he can tell on
day 1 of the year which students suffer from ADHD. How do you respond?
