On campus assignments: Friday small groups

On Fridays, starting the second week, students will respond, in groups of 3 or 4, to questions based on the material for the week. This could include material from lecture and discussion in class, from assigned readings, or from online lecture material.

The small group Fridays will continue from weeks 2 through 5. We will spend the first half of class discussing and grasping some of the key concepts that will form the basis of activities and projects in the second half of the class, after the midterm.

Students who miss classes during the week will be expected to have prepared for Friday by making up missed source material. Responses will be turned in at the end of class, hand-written (each group turning in one set of responses). There is some strategy involved, someone who serves as a scribe for instance might be relied on less to brainstorm answers than to translate them into well-written and reasoned responses. The goal of these Fridays is not to come up with the ‘right’ answers, but to discuss the questions and respond in ways that reflect the different perspectives of group members.
