Community event/activity
Everyone must attend one activity—it could be an event, a City Council meeting, a Chamber of Commerce meeting, Farmers’ Market, but it must be community-based. Make observaations, take notes, collect whatever information you can while there (handouts, agendas, meetings from previous minutes), identify key individuals (e.g., officers) and their affiliations, describe the content of the meeting but also the dynamics (who speaks, who doesn’t, attendance numbers, are their gender/race/ethnicity/class dynamics involved, how are decisions made, what key issues are identified, etc.).
Your write-up should include a full description of the event, the organizational context (what did you attend—was it an agency, organization, government meeting, etc., and where do they seem to fit within the community structure? What was the agenda for the event, what have you learned about the entities involved, etc.), decision making processes (top-down, participatory, inclusive, etc.), demographics of attendees (as best you can tell—age, race, ethnicity, gender, etc.).
60 points possible, write up due May 21 (3-4 pages)
