Extra credit opportunities
There are two. The first is my course evaluation (this is separate from the University’s which I encourage you to complete as well). Depending on the percent of the class that completes and submits it (strictly confidential, so don’t identify yourselves), it is worth up to five points. Call it my test of a theory of collective action. Hardly ever does the entire class complete it, and so hardly ever does everyone receive five points. But probability being what it is . . . one never knows. The evaluation will be open from June 10-13.
The second opportunity for extra credit is to watch a film and apply a theoretical perspective to analyzing it, for up to 15 points (a ’15’ showing admirable intellectual effort). Here are the nominees:
Film | Theorist/ theory/ perspective | Film | Theorist/ theory/ perspective |
The Bridge | Emile Durkheim (suicide) | Get Out, Fruitvale Station, Mudbound | Race theory |
Unzipped | Erving Goffman (dramaturgy), Georg Simmel | One flew over the cuckoo’s nest | Goffman (Asylum, control) |
Metropolis; Parasite | Karl Marx (Marxism) | Alias Grace; Handmaid’s Tale | Feminism |
Eva, Her | Modernity, Postmodernity | Never rarely sometimes always; Brazil | Max Weber (rationalization) |
We can discuss. You will have to find access (they should all be streamable, for a minimal fee). You will need to briefly summarize the film—lots of resources if you seek guidance—and tie it to the theory–which you must explain–with evidence and detail from the film (and demonstrating a knowledge of the theory you’re applying).
