Midterm study guide
Catalog description: Most everyone physically lives in a community. But how often do we think about it as an entity worthy of study and understanding, rather than simply the background of people’s social lives? This course will provide students different ways to think about communities, their structure and important institutions (government, education, business and economics, health care, welfare, faith, criminal justice, etc.), historical processes of change, and some theory about what is important to examine in understanding social life at the community level. A healthy portion of the class will be spent using the city of La Grande as a laboratory. Link to syllabus.
Prerequisites: None. Soc 204 & 205 recommended , not required. Non Soc majors welcome.
Required Text: Randy Stoecker. 2013. Research Methods for Community Change: A Project-Based Approach. Los Angeles: Sage (plus other assigned readings)
